I’ve gotten several inquiries about Americans trying to go to Panama for work.  Maybe because the situation has gotten so back with high unemployment across several states, the debt cieling debate with no end in sight or just that many americans want to adventure to panama and get a job.

Reality Check for Americans looking for a job in Panama

If you an american in panama as a tourist, don’t even think about working.  You need to physically get out of the country (you can practically walk across the border to Costa Rica … but please use the official entry way … not through a side door with all the stores that huddle the border town).  Once you are out than you request a visa … but there is a catch.  A panamanian company must request you .. maybe because you have a special skill.

Alternative to getting a job in Panama for Americans

One thing I tell Americans that it is easier to open a business (corporation) than it is to get a job.  If you don’t have a work visa .. don’t work .  Believe me the locals will notify immigration and will kick you out.  They don’t like foreigners to take away jobs of locals.  So if you want to work … have a work visa which is not so easy to get.

But there is a way to get around it and that is through buying a company, there are many legitatmate companies in Panama that will sell you an established company in Panama which is up to date in taxes.  Or you can buy a franchise an open it up there.  BUT you need to know that you can’t work in your company … just own it.  Remember that you don’t have a work visa but if you are like me than you have accomplished the fact that you are now living in Panama.

Committed to getting a Job in Panama

If you are still committed on the idea of working in  panama … than I would research for headhunters in Panama … the majority are located in Panama City.  You should only apply if you have an advanced degree (minimum college) and have over 5 years experience.  It really doesn’t matter what field, but the engineering and computer science are great right now.  Also there are special engineering / construction specialties for the construction of the revamped Panama Canal Zone that would be of intrest to Panama companies.

Either way … don’t go to Panama without a plan of action.  Know the rules before you go an try to get a
